TL;DR

Rizz App rebuilt its onboarding around a two-step paywall that forced an active subscription decision. The new flow boosted overall onboarding conversions by 10%, increased the trial conversion rate by 10%, and reduced early churn by ensuring users consciously chose their trial.

## Overview

Rizz App is an app for generating customized pickup lines and chat responses, using AI to improve users' social interactions. For Rizz App, securing conversions during the initial onboarding flow is important, as these users typically become the longest-term subscribers.

Using Superwall's flexible paywall architecture and targeting, Rizz App tested a new onboarding flow designed to make the subscription decision more intentional and reduce low-commitment trials.

## The challenge

Rizz App faced a challenge in their trial quality:

### Unintentional trials

The most effective paywall placement is typically during onboarding, but many users cancelled the trial early because they didn't actively choose it.

### High churn risk

Passive trial sign-ups lead to high early churn, eroding confidence in conversion metrics and masking the true profitability of the app.

### Flow optimization

The team needed to implement a two-step flow, while allowing non-committed users to proceed smoothly.

## The solution

Rizz App implemented their two-step paywall using Superwall's dynamic logic and placement control:

### First paywall (awareness)

Placed right after the landing screen, the paywall had the trial toggle OFF by default. If the user tapped "Continue" without toggling, they proceeded without a trial, reducing early friction while making users aware a trial was available.

### Second paywall (conversion)

Placed at the end of the onboarding, this paywall had the same logic. It included a delayed "X" to allow skipping. If the user toggled off the free trial, they were prompted with a direct subscription instead.

This setup ensured the subscription decision was actively chosen, not passively accepted, across two critical moments in the onboarding flow.

## The results

The move to an intentional, multi-step conversion flow immediately boosted Rizz App's key metrics.

### Onboarding conversion boosted

The new setup boosted overall onboarding conversions by 10% compared to the original paywall.

### Trial conversion improved

The trial conversion rate increased by 10% as well, showing the power of an intentional decision.

### Subscription quality improved

The flow reduced early churn by ensuring users made a conscious decision, maximizing trial quality.

## Now it's your turn
