# Superwall: Subscription Infrastructure for iOS, Android, and Web

Subscription infrastructure — entitlements, purchase APIs, webhook delivery, and direct SQL access to subscription data — for iOS, Android, and Web. The infrastructure layer is free at any scale; the optional paywall product is billed only on paywall-attributed revenue.

## Pricing

- **Infrastructure: free at any scale, every plan.** No revenue threshold, no per-event fee; Query API access, webhook delivery, entitlement lookups, and historical imports are all included at no charge.
- **Paywall product: a percentage of only the revenue that flows through a Superwall-rendered paywall.** Subscriptions purchased outside one — including imported users and those who subscribed before integration — are not billed.

Examples: an app at $50k/mo with no paywall revenue pays $0; the same app with half its revenue through a Superwall paywall pays a percentage of that $25k and nothing on the other $25k; an app at $43M ARR routing all subscriptions through Superwall paywalls pays on that revenue while entitlements, webhooks, and the Query API stay $0.

## Scale

$1.5B+ annual subscription revenue across 10,000+ apps. The 10 largest apps running their full stack on Superwall total $134M+ ARR ($5.7M–$43.7M each). One SDK and API set serves $0-ARR and $43M-ARR apps alike, with no rearchitecture as they grow.

## Infrastructure capabilities

- **Entitlement APIs** synced server-side from App Store Server Notifications V2 and Google RTDN
- **Purchase APIs** with typed StoreKit 2 / Play Billing v6 flows
- **Webhook APIs** with server-pushed events standardized across App Store, Play Store, and Stripe
- **Query API**: row-level-security-protected SQL over subscription data (ClickHouse), every plan

Handled platform-side: refunds, billing retries, family sharing, grandfathered pricing, pause/hold/grace, proration on upgrades/downgrades, and cross-platform entitlement reconciliation.

## Migration

Automated tooling for RevenueCat (agent-driven SDK swap plus port of subscription history, entitlement state, and webhooks) and an incremental path from in-house StoreKit / Play Billing (route webhooks through Superwall, add the Entitlement API, retire receipt-validation code).

## Paywall product (optional, separately billable)

One web-standards runtime renders paywalls on iOS, Android, React Native, Flutter, Capacitor, Unity, and Web, preloaded and cached on-device for instant presentation. Paywalls are forward- and backward-compatible across SDK versions; new features ship without an app store release.

## Architecture

Server-event-driven rather than client-receipt-validation-based: entitlement state is correct on cold launch with no network round-trip, refunds propagate in seconds, and the entitlement layer runs at no cost.

# Monthly Billing Plans for Annual Subscriptions

Sell an annual App Store subscription as 12 monthly payments with Superwall. Add Apple's monthly billing plan to the product, choose monthly installments or up-front billing per paywall, and compare the two in charts.

Apple lets an annual App Store subscription offer a monthly billing plan: the customer commits to 12 months and pays monthly instead of all at once. In Superwall, the same annual product can show as monthly installments on one paywall and as an up-front annual price on another, so you can test which one converts better.

## Requirements

* An iOS App Store subscription with a period of **1 year**, with the monthly billing plan set up in App Store Connect.
* iOS SDK 4.16.0 or later.
* Users on iOS 26.4 or later. On earlier versions, StoreKit uses Apple's default billing plan for the product.

## Add the plan to the product

1. Open the iOS App Store product in **Products**.
2. Make sure **Period** is set to **1 year**.
3. Click **Add monthly billing plan**.
4. Enter the **Monthly price**.
5. If the monthly plan has its own introductory offer, configure **Monthly trial**.
6. Click **Save**.

The **Monthly price** and **Monthly trial** are used for previews in the paywall editor. On the device, the SDK reads the plan's price from StoreKit, so customers see App Store localized pricing.

## Choose the billing plan on a paywall

After you add the product to a paywall, its product entry shows a **Billing plan** control:

| Option | What it does |
| -------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Monthly installments | Presents Apple's monthly billing plan where available. This is the default for products that offer a monthly billing plan. |
| Up-front | Presents the up-front annual billing plan for this paywall slot. |

The choice is stored per paywall product slot. To test monthly installments against up-front billing, use two paywalls with the same product and different billing plans in one [experiment](/docs/dashboard/dashboard-campaigns/campaigns-starting-an-experiment).

## Write copy for both plans

Each annual product with a monthly billing plan has two extra [variables](/docs/dashboard/dashboard-creating-paywalls/paywall-editor-variables):

| Variable | Values | Use it for |
| ------------------------ | ------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| `billingPlanType` | `MONTHLY`, `UP_FRONT`, or empty | Showing which plan the product will use when Apple can honor it. |
| `isBillingPlanAvailable` | `true` or `false` | Hiding monthly-installment copy when the selected billing plan is unavailable on the user's device or storefront. |

For example, use `products.selected.isBillingPlanAvailable` with a [dynamic value](/docs/dashboard/dashboard-creating-paywalls/paywall-editor-dynamic-values) before showing copy such as "Billed monthly for 12 months."

## When the plan isn't available

The SDK applies the selected plan when the user purchases, through StoreKit 2. If the user's device or storefront can't use the monthly billing plan, StoreKit falls back to Apple's default billing plan for the product. Hide installment-specific copy with `isBillingPlanAvailable` so the paywall matches what the user is charged.

## Compare the plans in charts

Supported revenue [charts](/docs/dashboard/charts) can be broken down by **Billing Plan Type**, to compare monthly-installment revenue against up-front annual revenue.
