Exit Offers: Show a Different Offer When Users Tap X

When a user goes to close your paywall, slide up a drawer with a restructured offer — a longer trial, a monthly price, or a discount — built in the Superwall editor and shipped with no app release.

When a user taps X on your paywall, don't just close it. An exit offer slides up a drawer with a different way to say yes — a longer trial, a monthly price instead of the annual lead, or a discount — and it's built in the same paywall editor, shipped without an app release.

Why it matters

Most users who see your paywall dismiss it, and most apps treat that tap on the X as a hard no. It usually isn't. It's a no to this offer: the annual price caused sticker shock, the trial felt too short, or the commitment was bigger than their confidence in the app. The user is still there, one tap away — which makes the close button the cheapest, highest-intent moment to present a restructured offer.

This is distinct from an abandoned transaction — a user who taps buy and then cancels the store checkout sheet, like an abandoned cart in e-commerce. Superwall handles that moment too; see the abandoned transactions playbook. Exit offers are about the step before: the user who goes to close the paywall without ever starting a purchase.

What you can do with Superwall

  • Intercept the X with a drawer. Add a Drawer element to the paywall and wire the close button to open it instead of dismissing — so the exit offer slides up on the same paywall, at the exact moment the user tries to leave.

  • Offer a longer trial. Put a purchase button for a product with an extended trial inside the drawer, for the user whose objection is confidence, not price.

  • Offer monthly instead of annual. If your paywall leads with yearly, let the drawer present the monthly plan — a smaller commitment for the user who balked at the up-front number.

  • Offer a discounted price. Present a lower-priced or intro-offer product as a genuine one-time save before the user walks.

  • A/B test which exit offer wins. Run trial-extension vs monthly vs discount as an experiment, judge them on proceeds per user, and ship the winner — no app release, no engineering queue.

How it works

Add a Drawer to your paywall. In the paywall editor, drop in a Drawer element and build the exit offer inside it — the alternate product, its own headline and copy, and a purchase button.

Wire the close button to open it. Bind the drawer's open state to a state variable and set the X button's tap behavior to flip it, so the first tap on close reveals the offer. The drawer keeps its own close control for users who really are done.

Pick the offer that answers the objection. A longer trial, the monthly plan, or a discounted price — each one is just a different product on the drawer's purchase button.

Publish and test on a device. Preview the paywall, tap X, and watch the exit offer slide up. Then run it as an experiment against the no-drawer control and read conversion and proceeds per user in the results.

Proof from customers

Promotions, win-back, offers, and recovery flows are the second-most-requested job in Superwall's customer research — cited in 43% of calls, behind only paywall A/B testing. Customers volunteer conditional discounts as high-priority, high-converting opportunities, and the recurring theme is speed: teams want to test save offers without turning every experiment into engineering work.

A dismissal is rarely a no to your app — it's a no to this offer. The exit drawer is your one chance to change the offer before the user is gone.

Use cases

  • Longer trial on exit: 3-day trial declined? The drawer offers 7 or 14 days for the user who wants more time to be sure.

  • Monthly fallback: lead with annual on the paywall, catch the X with a monthly option that lowers the commitment.

  • Discount save: a genuine, time-limited discount on the plan they just declined.

  • Downsell tier: offer a lighter plan — weekly, or a reduced feature tier — to the user the full product overshot.

  • Exit-offer experiments: test which restructure — time, cadence, or price — actually recovers the most dismissals for your audience.
