Monthly Installments: Sell the Annual Plan at a Monthly Price
Offer Apple's monthly billing plan on your annual iOS subscription — the same 12-month commitment billed monthly — and choose per paywall slot whether to lead with installments or the up-front price.
What you can do
-
Attach Apple's monthly billing plan to your annual product. Configure it in App Store Connect, then add the monthly billing plan to the annual App Store product in Superwall with its monthly price and optional monthly trial.
-
Choose the framing per paywall slot. Each paywall product slot picks monthly installments or up-front — the same annual product can be installments on one paywall and up-front on another.
-
A/B test installments against up-front. Run the two presentations of the same product as variants in a campaign, judge them on proceeds per user, and ship the winner without touching the app.
-
Keep the copy honest when the plan isn't available. If a device or storefront can't use the monthly billing plan, StoreKit falls back to Apple's default — and
products.selected.isBillingPlanAvailablelets you hide installment-specific copy for exactly those users.
How it works
Set up the plan in App Store Connect. Configure the monthly billing plan on the annual subscription there first — Superwall presents the plan, Apple owns the billing.
Add it to the product in Superwall. Open the iOS App Store product in Products, make sure its period is one year, click Add monthly billing plan, and enter the monthly price (plus a monthly trial if the plan has its own introductory offer). Those values drive editor previews; on device, the iOS SDK (4.16.0+) reads the matching StoreKit pricing term and uses App Store localized pricing.
Pick installments or up-front on each paywall. The product entry in the paywall editor shows a billing plan control — monthly installments is the default when the product offers one. The choice is stored per slot, so your onboarding paywall can lead with installments while a winback paywall keeps the up-front price.
Run it as an experiment. Test installments vs up-front on proceeds per user. Installments trade up-front cash for a lower barrier, so watch collections over the commitment alongside conversion before declaring a winner.
Use cases
-
Lower the barrier on your lead plan: present the annual plan at its real monthly price to users who balk at a three-digit total.
-
Replace the monthly SKU: test whether installments on annual can win over users who'd otherwise pick the low-commitment monthly plan.
-
Segment the framing: installments for price-sensitive audiences or storefronts, up-front for users who respond to the savings anchor.
-
Pair with a trial: configure the monthly plan's own introductory offer so the installment path keeps a trial-forward entry.
